Solar, wind, and geothermal energy credits for certain improvements have been extended through Dec 31st of 2016. The credit is equal to 30% of the cost of the following property:
- Solar Energy Systems (water heating and electricity)
- Fuel Cells (natural gas is converted to electricity and heat for water)
- Small Wind Energy Systems (turbines used to produce electricity for one building)
- Geothermal Heat Pumps (uses Earth's natural heat to heat fluid which is pumped through your home)
Details of the 30% Credit
- Credit is available only for principal residences and second homes.
- The cost includes labor costs for onsite preparation, assembly of and installation of the unit, and the piping or wiring required to connect the unit to the home.
- Credit is available for new construction as well as for improvements to existing homes.
- Taxpayers can rely on the manufacturer's statement to certify the property's qualification for the credit.
- There is no cap on the amount of the credit if the items are purchased afterJanuary 1, 2009, and this credit is not phased out by income levels.
